Reason Why GUNTHER Won Back the World Title Revealed

Reason Why GUNTHER Won Back the World Title RevealedGUNTHER reclaimed the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on this week’s episode of RAW, defeating Jey Uso in the main event to begin his second reign with the title. Now, new details are emerging about why WWE made the switch.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the decision to put the championship back on GUNTHER was made by WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H. The report states that Triple H wants GUNTHER to enter Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 12 as champion for a highly anticipated matchup — against WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg in what’s planned to be the latter’s retirement match.

The bout is reportedly scheduled to air on NBC, marking a rare free TV special featuring a world title match. WWE is looking to deliver a marquee moment that could serve as direct counter-programming to AEW’s All In: Texas, which airs that same weekend.

Though WWE has not officially announced Goldberg’s return, he is expected to appear on next week’s RAW in Green Bay, Wisconsin. If confirmed, it will be his first WWE appearance since 2022.

This match would also mark the first-ever meeting between GUNTHER and Goldberg. The idea of the former WCW legend facing one of WWE’s most dominant modern champions — and doing so with the world title on the line — adds significant weight to Goldberg’s final match.

GUNTHER’s reign resumes just 51 days after Jey Uso ended his first run at WrestleMania 41. With the rematch now complete, WWE is looking ahead to a bigger spotlight as July 12 approaches.
