Drew McIntyre Confirms He’s Still “Working Hurt” Following Backlash Spot – Drew McIntyre has confirmed that he is currently dealing with a lingering injury sustained during WWE Backlash, adding another layer of intensity to his ongoing rivalry with Damian Priest.
The injury occurred during the Fatal 4-Way match for the United States Championship at the May event, which saw Jacob Fatu walk away with the title. In a particularly brutal sequence, McIntyre and Priest brawled into the crowd before Priest delivered a devastating South of Heaven Chokeslam off a platform. The spot went awry, with McIntyre reportedly missing the target table and striking his head on the floor.
Speaking with Jay Reddick of the Orlando Sentinel, McIntyre provided a candid update on his condition: “I can’t turn my head all the way left yet…” The comment highlights the lingering pain he’s dealing with as he continues to perform on WWE programming.
He went on to explain the reality of wrestling through pain, saying, “Working hurt is just what happens if you’re an athlete, especially as the years go by. If you’re injured, it is something to take care of. Maybe back in the day, we would have taped it up and gone with it.”
McIntyre, a veteran known for his toughness, admitted to pushing through far more serious injuries earlier in his career. “In the past, I have worked with muscle tears and breaks, which isn’t the most sensible thing, but the way we operate now, you want to last for the long run,” he said, acknowledging WWE’s modern approach to injury management and longevity.
Despite the setback, McIntyre is scheduled to face Priest once again—this time in a steel cage match set for Saturday Night’s Main Event. The match promises to continue their increasingly personal feud, which has intensified since Priest’s betrayal of The Judgment Day and McIntyre’s renewed focus on climbing back to main event prominence.
While McIntyre’s injury isn’t expected to sideline him completely, the effects are clearly still being felt. Whether he can endure another physically taxing battle inside the steel structure remains to be seen.
