WWE Rules Out Cody Rhodes Heel Turn -WWE reportedly floated the idea of turning Cody Rhodes heel earlier this year, but the plan was met with significant internal resistance, according to new backstage reports.
The concept of a heel turn for Rhodes was initially discussed in the months leading up to Elimination Chamber: Toronto, an angle that ultimately ended up involving John Cena instead. At the time, sources close to Cody were said to be firmly against the idea of a turn, citing several key reasons—most notably, his overwhelming popularity with live audiences across both domestic and international markets.
Another major factor influencing the decision was Rhodes’ strong performance in merchandise sales and box office draws as a top babyface. WWE officials reportedly felt that a heel turn would risk undercutting his momentum and jeopardizing his role as one of the company’s leading faces, both on-screen and financially.
The topic resurfaced in recent weeks after The Rock appeared on The Pat McAfee Show and teased the potential to revisit the storyline, cryptically referencing that Cody had “sold him his soul.” While this reignited fan speculation online, internal WWE sources stated that there were still no official plans to shift Rhodes into a villainous role, especially not as of WrestleMania 41.
WWE had already mapped out year-long babyface storylines for Rhodes and was focused on capitalizing on his current character positioning. Additionally, leadership reportedly didn’t want to give too much oxygen to The Rock’s comments, fearing that attention might disrupt their creative plans.
As previously reported, Cody Rhodes is expected to return soon.
