Goldberg Calls GUNTHER Match an “Honor,” Reflects on Retirement at 58

Goldberg Calls GUNTHER Match an “Honor,” Reflects on Retirement at 58 – WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg has officially confirmed that his final match will take place on July 12 at the Saturday Night’s Main Event television special, where he will challenge World Heavyweight Champion GUNTHER in a high-profile clash set for Atlanta, Georgia — Goldberg’s hometown.

The match was set up during Goldberg’s return on the June 16 episode of RAW, where the veteran confronted GUNTHER and laid down the challenge for what will be his retirement bout. Speaking on The Dan Sileo Show, Goldberg opened up about the magnitude of the moment, praising GUNTHER’s rise and acknowledging the significance of ending his career in a world title match.

“I remember meeting him years ago right when he broke in and the guy had a shooting star up his ass at that point and I knew he was gonna be destined for big things and hey, it’s an honor for me to get in the ring with him,” Goldberg said. “It’s an honor to step into a position to be vying for the World Heavyweight Championship at 58 years old. I don’t know of any other ones who’ve retired with a match like that.”

The bout will be Goldberg’s first in-ring appearance since 2022 and marks his first attempt at the World Heavyweight Championship under its current lineage. For GUNTHER, it’s another major title defense during a dominant reign that has redefined his presence in the main event scene.

Goldberg, 58, is one of the most iconic names in professional wrestling history, known for his explosive undefeated streak in WCW and multiple title reigns in WWE. Ending his career in a marquee match against one of WWE’s top champions serves as a fitting send-off for a Hall of Fame career.
