Update on Alberto Del Rio WWE Status Following AAA Acquisition – Despite WWE’s acquisition of Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide earlier this year, the company reportedly has no intention of working with former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Alberto El Patron (formerly Alberto Del Rio). According to a new report from BodySlam, WWE’s internal position on El Patron remains unchanged, and there are no plans to feature him in any capacity moving forward.
The report clarifies that WWE has not contacted El Patron since the AAA acquisition was finalized, nor has he received any creative pitches or been discussed for potential involvement in future programming. Even though his AAA contract now technically falls under WWE’s umbrella, sources indicate he is not being factored into any roster or storyline plans.
Furthermore, WWE has allegedly taken proactive steps to distance itself from El Patron’s presence in the AAA product. These efforts reportedly include booking El Hijo del Vikingo to defeat El Patron for the AAA Mega Championship, a title Vikingo has since successfully defended, including at Worlds Collide.
El Patron’s history with WWE spans two stints between 2009 and 2016, during which he captured multiple titles, including the WWE Championship and the World Heavyweight Championship. However, his time with the company ended amid backstage issues and controversy.
Outside the ring, El Patron remains a divisive figure due to serious legal accusations in 2020, including aggravated kidnapping and sexual assault. While those charges were ultimately dismissed due to the accuser being unavailable, the damage to his public image has lingered.
At this time, WWE appears focused on promoting fresh talent and distancing itself from figures whose reputations might conflict with the company’s current branding and corporate direction.
