JBL Criticizes WWE’s Press Conferences, Praises Triple H for Blurring the Lines – On a recent episode of the Something to Wrestle With podcast, WWE Hall of Famer JBL shared his candid thoughts on the company’s current creative direction. While he praised WWE’s ongoing business success, he expressed strong disapproval of the post-show press conferences that have become a fixture after major events.
“Those press conferences are horrible. I hate them because there’s no way to win with those things,” JBL stated. “Because you want to either stay in character or not stay in character. It’s hard to do both. It’s hard to work and then also shoot on those things. I don’t, I don’t get the press conferences.”
JBL’s critique highlights a long-standing issue in the wrestling industry: the balance between maintaining kayfabe and engaging in behind-the-scenes transparency. In his view, WWE is occasionally too open about the inner workings of its storytelling, diluting the mystique that once defined the business.
However, the former WWE Champion did applaud Triple H for how he handled the recent situation involving R-Truth—now performing under his real name, Ron Killings. JBL pointed to the creative ambiguity surrounding Truth’s storyline return and the way it blurred the line between reality and fiction.
“I like what Triple H did, because he kept the intrigue of maybe this was a work all along, and so now you don’t know what is,” JBL said. “I love that, because that blurs that line. And I think, I think that’s important to blur that line.”
JBL added that in an era where fans demand constant transparency, it’s actually the perfect opportunity to mislead and surprise them—if done skillfully.
“Right now is the easiest time to work people. They expect you to be completely transparent. So now is the easiest time to work people.”
