Eric Bischoff Shuts Down WWE Blake Monroe Name Controversy – On the latest episode of 83 Weeks, former WCW President Eric Bischoff gave his thoughts on the recent controversy surrounding WWE’s renaming of former AEW star Mariah May to “Blake Monroe” — a name also associated with a well-known adult film actress. Despite the attention the coincidence has drawn online, Bischoff made it clear he doesn’t believe the matter holds much significance in today’s entertainment landscape.
“I think as a culture, speaking about entertainment culture, we’ve gotten so numb to every extreme of extreme that’s out there. It’s just another day in the office anymore,” Bischoff said. “I don’t think it matters at all. I don’t think it matters to advertisers anymore, as long as it’s driving audience… as long as it’s working from an ad revenue point of view, I just don’t think people care anymore.”
Bischoff emphasized that, in today’s environment, branding overlaps like this one are unlikely to affect a performer’s push or a company’s bottom line. According to him, the days of moral panic or corporate backlash over these types of controversies are long gone — especially in a culture that consumes edgier content on a daily basis.
He then compared the present situation with how things might have played out during his era in the business.
“Years ago… certainly 20 years ago, when I was active in the business, it would have been an issue,” he explained. “Somebody would have egg on their face… But now it’s like, ‘That’s funny. Let’s go with that.’”
WWE has not publicly acknowledged the coincidence, and as of now, there are no indications that the company plans to change the name. Bischoff’s comments suggest that even if fans or media bring attention to the situation, the internal reaction at WWE is likely minimal — as long as the new character resonates with the audience.
