Two More Advance in the AEW Continental Challenge Cup on Dynamite

The August 19 episode of AEW Dynamite delivered two quarterfinal bouts in the Continental Challenge Cup, pushing the tournament closer to its semifinals in Glasgow, Scotland. With the finals set for AEW All In London on August 30, the field tightened as Jon Moxley and Nigel McGuinness secured their spots.

Moxley entered the night carrying momentum after dismantling Jack Perry in the first round. His quarterfinal opponent, Jay White, came in with confidence of his own, having pinned Moxley twice in the past — including once in AEW. Their history added weight to the match, and White threw everything he had at the reigning Continental Champion.

White nearly sealed the win after landing a Blade Runner late in the match, but Moxley’s momentum sent him rolling out of the ring before White could make the cover. When Moxley returned, he baited White into a trap and locked in the Rear Naked Choke — the same hold that ended Perry’s night. White fought hard, but eventually faded, giving Moxley the submission victory and a place in the semifinals.

Nigel McGuinness Scores an Upset Over Hechicero

The second quarterfinal featured CMLL World Heavyweight Champion Hechicero against Nigel McGuinness, who entered the match nursing an ankle injury from his first‑round battle with Katsuyori Shibata. Hechicero targeted the injury from the opening bell, cutting off McGuinness repeatedly and controlling much of the match.

McGuinness tried to counter Hechicero’s momentum whenever possible, and in the end, that strategy paid off. Hechicero’s aggression led him straight into a Guillotine, a move McGuinness could fully apply without relying on his damaged ankle. He squeezed with everything he had left, draining Hechicero and earning a victory many fans considered an upset given the circumstances.

With their wins, Moxley and McGuinness now move into Monday’s semifinal blind draw. They will be joined by the winners of Claudio Castagnoli vs. Eddie Kingston and Orange Cassidy vs. Kyle O’Reilly, both scheduled for the August 22 episode of AEW Collision.

The Continental Challenge Cup continues to build toward its final chapter, and Dynamite’s quarterfinals ensured the road to London remains unpredictable.
