WWE Considering Two-Night Royal Rumble Event

WWE could be moving closer to making the Royal Rumble a two-night Premium Live Event. The 2027 Royal Rumble is currently expected to remain a one-night show in Phoenix, Arizona, but there is growing internal interest in expanding the event into a larger weekend attraction. If the change does not happen in 2027, the two-night format could potentially begin in 2028.

The idea would give WWE another major event spread across two nights, following the successful expansion of WrestleMania and SummerSlam. However, WWE Hall of Famer JBL believes the company itself may not be the main force behind the possible change.

According to JBL, ESPN could have a strong reason to push for a longer Royal Rumble weekend. The event takes place during a difficult period on the American sports calendar, between the NFL Conference Championship Games and the Super Bowl. With the NFL season approaching its conclusion, there is a notable gap in major sports programming.

Speaking on Something To Wrestle, JBL stressed that he does not have any inside information about WWE’s plans. However, he believes television rights could play an important role in any discussions about expanding the Royal Rumble.

“I would think it’s both. I don’t have any insight into what they’re doing, but obviously it’s a negotiation of both, and it’s probably ESPN. I’m sure they’re looking for something that weekend.”

Two-Night Royal Rumble Could Benefit ESPN

JBL believes the NFL schedule could make the Royal Rumble especially valuable to ESPN during that weekend. There are no NFL playoff games between the Conference Championship Games and the Super Bowl, creating a period where sports networks need to find other ways to keep audiences interested.

“That is one of the most dead weekends in sports. The NFL has tried to figure out a way to figure out what to do that weekend. The Hall of Fame game was never a huge draw, and so they’re trying to figure out a way to do something for that weekend.”

JBL suggested that ESPN could view WWE as a solution to that programming problem. A two-night Royal Rumble would provide the network with a major wrestling event across an entire weekend instead of having the Royal Rumble occupy only one night.

“I feel like that would probably be ESPN saying, we have a really big problem here with this weekend keeping people around leading up to the Super Bowl. People just forget, for lack of a better term, storylines in the Super Bowls and things like that.”

The former WWE Champion also dismissed the idea that the host city would be the main factor behind expanding the event. While a host city would benefit from having WWE programming across multiple nights, JBL believes the television rights and the value of additional programming are much more important factors.

“I think probably ESPN, because the rights fees, that’s just a matter of negotiating which town is going to do it on what weekend. I don’t see how that would matter between January and February.”

There is also a clear wrestling-related argument for making the Royal Rumble a two-night show. Both the men’s and women’s Royal Rumble matches can run for more than an hour, making them among the longest matches on WWE’s annual calendar. They are also important parts of the company’s build toward WrestleMania.

“The Rumble takes so long, well over an hour for the one match, and then you have the women’s match as well, so both of them are over an hour. And depending on the year, one’s going to be a bigger draw than the other, but both are big draws, and they’re the culmination of storylines.”

JBL believes WWE could place one Royal Rumble match on each night and build the rest of each card around the featured match. That approach would allow both the men’s and women’s matches to receive greater attention while giving WWE more room to showcase additional matches and storylines.

“They start the road to WrestleMania. So they’re big deals, these Royal Rumbles. So yeah, I think it makes perfect sense to separate the Rumbles from one night to the next, and then dress those around with the matches that you want.”

A two-night format would represent another major change to WWE’s Premium Live Event schedule. WrestleMania has already become a two-night event, while SummerSlam has also adopted the format. The Royal Rumble could now become the next major WWE event to receive the same treatment.

For now, the 2027 Royal Rumble is still expected to take place as a one-night event in Phoenix. There has been no confirmation that WWE will officially expand the show, but the possibility remains under consideration. If WWE and ESPN see enough value in creating an entire Royal Rumble weekend, the format could eventually become a permanent part of the company’s annual schedule.
