Kevin Owens and CM Punk followed up last week’s confrontation with another tense, extended face‑to‑face on the August 14 episode of SmackDown. The two continued building toward their Undisputed WWE Championship match on August 21, revisiting old history and escalating the personal issues between them.
Owens and Punk Deliver Another Explosive SmackDown Confrontation
Punk opened the segment by telling Owens he isn’t a coward and should say whatever he planned to say directly to his face. Owens responded by pointing out the timing, saying Punk waited until he was halfway up the aisle last week to call him a fat slob. Punk asked if Owens really believed he wouldn’t say it to his face.
Owens said their story goes back twenty years. They wrestled for the same independent promotion, with Punk as the top star and Owens trying to break through. Owens said Punk chose to tear him down in a locker room full of peers. He added that it wasn’t just that moment — it was who Punk had always been, including how he treated friends and the things he said.
Punk told him to be specific. Owens said it wasn’t three people — it was everyone. Punk called them losers.
Owens said many people look up to Punk because he came back and tried to fix things. Owens said he’s the one person who never bought it and never will. He called Punk a phony who only returned because he had no other option after burning bridges everywhere else. Owens said he doesn’t respect people like that.
Owens said he’s done fine on his own, noting he main‑evented WrestleMania against Steve Austin. Punk said he was happy for him, then asked if Owens thinks he would’ve gotten that spot if Punk had been around.
Owens told Punk to say it directly. Punk said he’s here as Undisputed Champion with a locker room full of people ready to fight him. He said he called out Oba Femi and got “endometriosis” instead. Punk said it would be a mistake to take Owens lightly. He said he sees wasted potential — a tough guy who’s still a bum. Punk said he evolved and adapted, and if Owens had done the same instead of avoiding the work, he wouldn’t have eaten that Goldberg spear.
Owens said he sees someone who main‑evented WrestleMania. He said Punk hates the man he sees in the mirror. Owens said he’s the same person he was twenty years ago, and now he’s facing Punk for the title. Owens said Punk couldn’t avoid Roman’s spear either.
Punk said he sees someone stubborn, loud, and convinced he’s always right. Owens asked if Punk was mad he never asked for his advice. Owens said he regrets not punching Punk in that locker room years ago.
Punk told him to do it. Owens said he didn’t back then because Punk would’ve ruined his career. Next week, he gets to beat Punk’s ass.
Punk closed by saying Owens will be staring up at the lights after Punk puts Kevin’s fat ass to sleep.
