John Cena Recalls Nearly “Stupid” Decision at ECW One Night Stand 2006 – At the Philadelphia Fan Expo, John Cena opened up about the infamous night he faced Rob Van Dam at ECW One Night Stand 2006, revealing a risky decision he made mid-match that could have gone terribly wrong.
Held at the legendary Hammerstein Ballroom—a venue deeply rooted in ECW’s rebellious legacy—Cena walked into a hostile environment. “The audience was pretty bad,” Cena said, remembering how chants of “F you Cena” echoed through the arena well before the main event began. “I knew by the time we went out at 10 o’clock it was going to be pretty gnarly.” One of the most iconic signs from that night, “If Cena wins, we riot,” was even brought to the expo by a fan.
Then came a surprising confession. “I would never do this again, and it was the most stupid decision of my life,” Cena revealed. “But I told Rob, hey, let’s go out into the audience. And I just wanted to see, like, what would happen… I thought I was gonna get my ass kicked, but everybody was real nice.”
Despite the venomous crowd reactions, Cena took a moment to thank the ECW faithful for their restraint and passion. “I appreciate the fans in Hammerstein that night for being professionals,” he said. “That could have ended a lot worse.”
The moment remains one of the most memorable in Cena’s career, not just for the match itself, but for the real risk he took outside the scripted chaos of WWE.
