Braun Strowman's WWE Release Linked to High Salary and Injury Concerns

Braun Strowman’s WWE Release Linked to High Salary and Injury Concerns – Braun Strowman, once a top-tier name in WWE and a former Universal Champion, was released by the company on May 2, 2025, as part of a widespread wave of roster cuts. This release marks the second time WWE has parted ways with Strowman, who was previously let go in June 2021 before returning in September 2022.

On the May 4 edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer provided insight into the factors that influenced WWE’s decision to release Strowman—real name Adam Scherr. According to Meltzer, internal sources pointed to Strowman’s high salary as a major factor in the decision, particularly in relation to how he was being utilized on television.

“He is the one that the salary was high,” Meltzer stated. “One person told me that they felt he was being… he was paid more than how they were using him, I guess is the best way to put it, but salary played a part in this.”

This reasoning closely mirrors the circumstances surrounding his first WWE release in 2021, where Strowman’s multi-million-dollar contract was reportedly seen as unsustainable under his then-position on the roster.

In addition to financial considerations, Meltzer also noted concerns about Strowman’s physical condition and performance following past injuries. Specifically, Meltzer highlighted the lingering effects of a hamstring injury, saying, “…the reality of Braun Strowman is, is that ever since he had that hamstring injury, he’s… never been the same.”

Strowman has not yet issued a formal public statement, but he did acknowledge the news in a subtle manner. On May 3, he posted an image on his account on X (formerly Twitter) of himself lounging poolside with a drink in hand—a possible quiet reflection on his current situation. No caption accompanied the post.

As of May 4, Strowman has not announced any plans regarding his future in professional wrestling or other endeavors. Per standard WWE protocol, he is subject to a 90-day non-compete clause, making him a free agent in early August 2025.
