While the appearance was likely orchestrated as part of WWE’s ongoing collaboration with Netflix, several individuals within the company reportedly took issue with Segura’s presence due to his controversial history with professional wrestling.
WrestleVotes shared that “several in the company were unhappy with the appearance of comedian Tom Segura this past Monday at RAW.” The frustration stems from past comments Segura made years ago on his podcast and in interviews, during which he mocked wrestling and its fanbase.
“Years ago, Segura made several disparaging comments about the wrestling business, calling it fake, stupid people who watch it idiots, and that the fights are not real, among other things that were much worse, and we’re not going to say on the air,” the report stated.
Although sources noted that Segura was respectful backstage during his RAW appearance, the unease wasn’t about his behavior on Monday — it was about the principle of his inclusion.
“While the few we talked to understood it was a Netflix call to have him on the show, and from all accounts, he was respectable while backstage, many within the company didn’t appreciate the fact that someone who was on record with these negative ideas and feelings towards pro wrestling could just walk right in and shake hands.”
As WWE continues to embrace more cross-promotional content under the Netflix partnership, balancing celebrity appearances with the respect and pride many talent and staff feel for the wrestling industry may present an ongoing challenge.
