Malakai Black Reportedly Wrapping Up With AEW – Malakai Black’s future with AEW appears uncertain amid reports that he may be finishing up with the company.
The January 8 edition of AEW Dynamite sparked speculation about Black’s status after Will Ospreay defeated Buddy Matthews. Following the match, Ospreay praised Matthews, urging him to step out of Black’s shadow and suggesting he didn’t need a leader to find success. This comment stirred buzz among fans and wrestlers alike.
According to Fightful Select, several AEW sources believe that Black is either done with AEW or close to it, though specifics about his potential final appearance remain unclear. Notably, Black is still listed on AEW’s official website as of this writing, leaving his status ambiguous.
Fueling rumors, Coastal Championship Wrestling (CCW) announced that Malakai Black will debut for the promotion on January 11 at CCW Havoc & Haze 9, where he’s scheduled to face Orion. This independent booking has only intensified speculation about his AEW exit.
Malakai Black signed with AEW in 2021, making an impactful debut at AEW Dynamite: Road Rager. His early rivalry with Cody Rhodes led to the creation of the House of Black, a faction that saw him, Brody King, and Buddy Matthews win the AEW World Trios Championship. Black’s last AEW match came in November at AEW Full Gear, where he and King unsuccessfully challenged for the tag team titles.
In September, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported that WWE had interest in bringing Black back. He also noted that Black attempted to give notice in 2022 after Triple H assumed creative control in WWE. While his AEW contract was said to run until early 2025, injury time could extend it.
With conflicting reports and a scheduled CCW appearance, Black’s next move remains a topic of intrigue.
