The storyline leading to this match began on the previous week’s NXT, where Hayes and Dragunov were set to sign a match contract before D’Angelo intervened. He claimed to have spoken with NXT General Manager Ava, resulting in a match between D’Angelo and Hayes, with the winner earning a shot at Dragunov’s title at Stand & Deliver.
Williams had been absent from TV since NXT Vengeance Day, where he was ambushed by Hayes, who targeted his leg and repeatedly attacked him with a steel chair. Hayes later admitted to being responsible for the attack on Williams that occurred backstage last fall.
