Dave Meltzer provided an update on Mauro Ranallo on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio and it sounds like things are getting better.
Meltzer said, “as far as Mauro Ranallo goes, he is doing better and I don’t know if he’s gonna be there Wednesday or not. I know the company has been in touch. I have the impression [that] they’re trying for him to be ready on Wednesday so hopefully he will.”
That is good to hear because Ranallo was said to be in rough shape this past week following Corey Graves’ tweet about his work at NXT TakeOver: WarGames.
As noted before, Ranallo has been very public about his mental health issues. Had Graves confronted him privately instead of in public, perhaps things would have been more positive this week. Graves has told people that his comments towards Ranallo were in character and meant to put over the brand rivalry. It’s hard to take that at face value when Graves praised Nigel McGuinness and Beth Phoenix, who also work on the NXT broadcast team.
Graves did end up apologizing for his comments after taking aim at people like Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez. Graves has also privately apologized to Frank Shamrock. It’s not known if he has attempted to apologize to Ranallo directly. He hasn’t apologized to Meltzer or Alvarez for accusing them of pushing a false narrative.
Clearly, this is a story WWE wants to go away. Beth Phoenix commented on Ranallo last Wednesday on NXT and said she is looking forward to seeing him next week. It looks more likely that he’ll be back soon but there are no guarantees that he’ll be back this Wednesday night.
