Former WWE Champion Drew McIntyre has opened up about the evolution of his current on-screen character, revealing how blurring the lines between reality and television has occasionally rubbed fellow wrestlers the wrong way backstage.
Blending Real-Life Personality With On-Screen Promos
Appearing on the Soder Podcast, “The Scottish Warrior” discussed how his time away from WWE years ago helped him develop the vocal confidence and sharp mic skills he displays today on television.
McIntyre explained that his current wrestling persona is essentially an amplified version of his natural real-life personality—specifically his tendency to tease others and talk trash:
- Finding His True Voice: “The past few years when I was outside the company, I really worked in the microphone stuff. Found my voice. Finally found my character which is basically me. There’s a lot of truth in there.”
- Unintentional Humor & Trash Talk: “And then I found out in real life I just talk so much crap and people are always laughing… I’m just unintentionally funny apparently. And then sometimes I was, I kind of rip on people a lot.”
- Scottish Cultural Roots: “I’m British. I’m Scottish. We talk crap all the time. Maybe I should start doing that on screen. And I really started letting people have it to the point they were forgetting they’re playing a character.”
Backstage Tension Over Social Media Bashing
While McIntyre’s ruthless social media trolling and biting promos have earned widespread acclaim from fans, he revealed that certain colleagues have struggled to separate wrestling storylines from personal attacks.
McIntyre recalled having to pull fellow talent aside backstage to clarify that his online insults were directed strictly at their television personas rather than their real-life selves:
- Reminding Superstars About Work vs. Reality: “They’re like, ‘You said that about me?’ ‘No, I didn’t. I said about your character on Twitter. Don’t be such a loser. It’s not you. It’s the character I’m talking to.’”
McIntyre’s ability to capitalize on real-world banter and weaponize social media remains a cornerstone of his heel work, even as his Hollywood acting career continues to expand during his current hiatus.
