Backstage News on Mercedes Moné’s Undefeated Streak – Mercedes Moné’s undefeated run in AEW has generated heavy discussion among fans, and now a new report sheds light on how her streak is closely tied to long-term creative planning for All In at Wembley Stadium.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Moné’s undefeated streak was not about ego or contractual protection but was instead a strategic decision aligned with AEW’s booking direction. While the reigning TBS Champion has yet to lose a match since her AEW debut, Dave Meltzer reports that Moné was open to doing business when it made narrative sense.
“Regarding Mercedes Moné not having lost in AEW since her debut, those close to her say she was willing to lose to Athena to build a rematch at All In,” Meltzer wrote.
However, once AEW shifted course and committed to Moné vs. Toni Storm for the AEW Women’s World Championship at All In, the creative team determined that a loss in the lead-up—especially in her Owen Hart Foundation Tournament final match against Kris Statlander—no longer made sense.
The report also reveals that Storm was not the original opponent planned for Moné at Wembley. AEW initially intended for Mariah May to face Moné at the stadium show, a match that would have been the culmination of an extended storyline. Those plans were scrapped after May declined to re-sign with AEW, eventually departing for WWE earlier this month.
With May out of the picture, AEW pivoted to what it believed was the biggest marquee matchup available: Moné vs. Toni Storm. That decision explains why Moné’s streak was preserved and why her match record has been carefully managed throughout her AEW run.
