Josh Mathews Joins AEW in Backstage Production Role – Josh Mathews, known for his extensive on-screen career in WWE and TNA Wrestling, has officially joined All Elite Wrestling in a backstage production role. According to a new report from PWInsider, Mathews was recently seen working inside AEW’s production truck during live broadcasts, confirming his involvement behind the scenes.
His new position involves coordinating communication between AEW’s production team and the coaches (also referred to as producers or agents) who help lay out the in-ring matches and segments. This liaison role is crucial in ensuring that live programming runs smoothly and that all departments are aligned during AEW’s live tapings and events.
Mathews brings a wealth of broadcasting and production experience to AEW. He first entered the wrestling spotlight as a contestant on the first season of WWE Tough Enough in 2001, where he finished as runner-up. WWE hired him in 2002, where he served in a wide range of roles, including backstage interviewer, show host, and eventually play-by-play commentator for brands such as ECW, SmackDown, and NXT. He was released from WWE in 2014 after over a decade of service.
Shortly afterward, Mathews signed with TNA Wrestling (later Impact Wrestling), where he assumed lead announcer duties in 2015, replacing Mike Tenay. He held that position through several company transitions and eventually moved into backstage leadership as Senior Producer and Senior Director of Digital Media. He exited TNA in February 2025 as part of broader staff changes following the company’s rebranding back to the TNA name.
Mathews’ transition to AEW adds another seasoned voice to the company’s backstage infrastructure. His wife, Madison Rayne, has been part of AEW since 2022, working as a coach and producer for the women’s division, making this a notable family presence behind the scenes.
