Update on a Possible Cody Rhodes Vs John Cena Match at WrestleMania 41 – As of now, Cody Rhodes is slated to face John Cena in what could be Cena’s final WrestleMania match this April at WrestleMania 41. According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the plan is for Cena to challenge Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship. The match would be framed around Cena attempting to break Ric Flair’s record of 16 world title reigns—a record he currently shares with Flair.
While the match is being discussed, it’s not guaranteed. Meltzer emphasized that plans could change, especially if Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson decides to wrestle at WrestleMania. Meltzer elaborated:
“The reports of Rhodes vs. John Cena are accurate as things stand right now. The idea of Cena challenging one of the two champions to break the so-called record of 16 reigns has been a working idea for months. Initially, the plan was Cena challenging for the RAW title, leaving Rhodes vs. Rock for the other title. However, this isn’t etched in stone. Whatever Rock wants to do, he’s likely going to be able to do. People at the top expect Rock to appear at WrestleMania, but his wrestling status isn’t confirmed. The Netflix special on January 6 could tip WWE’s hand regarding Rock’s involvement.”
2025 marks Cena’s final year as an in-ring competitor, with his retirement tour starting on RAW’s Netflix debut this Monday. Cena is scheduled for approximately 36 WWE appearances during the tour, culminating at year’s end.
Meanwhile, Cody Rhodes will defend the Undisputed WWE Championship against Kevin Owens in a ladder match at WWE Royal Rumble on Saturday, February 1.
