AEW Announces New Format to Determine Continental Classic Winner – AEW’s second-ever Continental Classic has introduced a new twist to its tournament format, revealed during the November 27 episode of Dynamite as the competition kicked off in Chicago. While the winner will still be crowned at Worlds End, AEW’s year-end pay-per-view on December 28 in Orlando, the path to victory has shifted significantly from last year’s structure.
Instead of the winners of the Blue and Gold Leagues facing off directly in the finals, this year’s format adds an additional layer of competition. At Worlds End, the Gold League winner will face the runner-up of the Blue League, and vice versa. The victors of these semifinal matches will then clash in the tournament final later that night. The ultimate winner will claim the Continental Championship, raising the stakes for every competitor.
Opening Night Results (11/27 Dynamite):
- Shelton Benjamin vs. Mark Briscoe (Blue League):
Benjamin, representing the Hurt Syndicate, secured a hard-fought victory with a floating powerslam, putting him in strong contention early on. - Claudio Castagnoli vs. Ricochet (Gold League):
Castagnoli’s powerhouse style proved too much for Ricochet as he earned the win via pinfall after delivering a brutal clothesline. - Brody King vs. Darby Allin (Gold League):
In a match that highlighted King’s dominance, he defeated Allin with a devastating Gonzo Bomb after nearly rendering him unconscious with a sleeper hold.
The tournament continues on AEW Collision this Saturday, with more matches to determine the standings in each league. As the competition heats up, fans can anticipate more thrilling matchups on the road to Worlds End.
