Backstage Talk on Plans for GUNTHER’s WrestleMania Opponent – WWE WrestleMania 40 is shaping up with several matches internally locked in, promising an electrifying weekend at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns is anticipated to headline night two against Cody Rhodes, while other confirmed bouts include WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins vs. Drew McIntyre, WWE Women’s World Champion Rhea Ripley vs. Becky Lynch, and WWE Women’s Champion IYO SKY vs. Bayley.
Despite the anticipation building around the event, there’s a noticeable absence of clarity surrounding GUNTHER, the Intercontinental titleholder, and his challenger. With less than 40 days until the grand spectacle, fans are eagerly awaiting news about his opponent.
Initially, rumors suggested Sami Zayn as GUNTHER’s potential challenger for the Intercontinental Title. However, recent developments, such as the tease of a multi-man match on Raw, indicate that plans may have shifted. On the Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer has hinted at these potential changes, leaving fans intrigued about what surprises WrestleMania 40 has in store.
Meltzer: “And something’s going on. I’ll probably get a clarification tomorrow. I had heard of GUNTHER and Sami Zayn. But when I watched the show tonight, it felt to me like there, it was very clear…”
Bryan Alvarez: “It felt to me like they’re doing a multi-person night one. And the winner gets GUNTHER night two.”
Meltzer: “ It could be that. Maybe that is what they’re going to do, or it just could be like a multi-person match. You know, where they, because they had Chad Gable, Gunther mentioned our R-Truth and The Miz.”
