Backstage News on The Booking of Gunther’s Intercontinental Title Reign – Tonight’s episode of RAW will feature WWE Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER defending his title against Chad Gable in a rematch.
Originally, there was speculation that this rematch would take place at WWE Payback this past Saturday, but it was ultimately held off for RAW. According to a report from Fightful Select, the decision to have the match on RAW was made to keep the Payback runtime in check and to give GUNTHER a chance to get closer to breaking the Intercontinental Title record held by WWE Hall of Famer The Honky Tonk Man.
WWE has been cautious about the runtime of Premium Live Events over the past year, especially for events that aren’t held in larger stadiums. This has resulted in several matches that might have been on Premium Live Event cards in the past being moved to episodes of RAW or SmackDown.
There was also a rumor about The Honky Tonk Man possibly appearing on last week’s RAW in Memphis and getting chopped by GUNTHER, but a WWE source claimed that this was never a consideration.
