Before CM Punk’s return to AEW on June 17 for the premiere of Collision, a misunderstanding arose between Punk, AEW, and Ace Steel. This issue revolved around Punk’s desire to have Steel return, which initially led to Punk’s removal from the AEW Collision announcement. Subsequently, Steel was reportedly let go from his position, but he was discreetly rehired prior to Punk’s comeback.
Over time, all parties involved managed to resolve their differences and reach an understanding. In order to prevent potential conflicts between Steel and talent, he began working remotely rather than attending Collision shows in person.
The latest update from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, provided by Dave Meltzer, confirmed that when CM Punk expressed his belief that Christopher Daniels shouldn’t be present at the shows, Daniels, who serves as AEW’s Head of Talent Relations, was also denied backstage access.
Christopher Daniels played a role in diffusing the backstage fight during All Out and subsequently suspended the individuals involved, excluding the Elite, Punk, and Steel, who received shorter suspensions.
Regarding Ace Steel’s rehiring, it was reportedly done with back pay for the time he was let go, as a concession to CM Punk’s agreement to return. However, Steel’s role has been limited to remote work and not working backstage.
The controversy surrounding Steel’s return centers around allegations that he threw a chair forcefully at Nick Jackson’s head and bit Kenny Omega on the forearm during the incident.
