As noted, fans left the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view with a bad taste in their mouth after the horrible ending for the Universal Championship match between Seth Rollins and Bray Wyatt.
There were loud chants of “AEW,” “restart the match,” and “bullsh*t” heard throughout the arena after the referee stopped the match due to a sledgehammer shot on Wyatt from Rollins.
It came across as if a disqualification was called during a match where there are not supposed to be any disqualifications.
However, after the show was over, WWE posted an article on its website and they avoided using the DQ term. They calls the decision a “match-stoppage ruling that led to Rollins retaining the title” and also references the “instantly controversial” result of the bout.
For all the nightmarish tenacity with which “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt has pursued Seth Rollins over the last few months, the otherworldly Superstar was kept from the title due to a match-stoppage ruling that led to Rollins retaining the title — a decision that proved to be instantly controversial at the end of the pair’s grisly Hell in a Cell Match. But that did very little to stop Wyatt from continuing his assault against the Universal Champion, whom he left writhing on the arena floor as Hell in a Cell finally faded to black.
Yes, that is how they are explaining it and there was no explanation given for why the referee didn’t restart the match when it was clear that Wyatt was fine after the sledgehammer shot.
What makes the finish worse is this is the second year in a row WWE has booked a Hell in a Cell match without a decisive finish. Last year’s Hell in a Cell match between Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman was ruled a no contest due to interference from Brock Lesnar.
