Cage Match Stipulation Added to AEW World Title Bout at Beach Break – A major stipulation has been made official for the Beach Break edition of Dynamite on Wednesday, May 14, in Chicago, Illinois. Reigning champion Jon Moxley will defend his title against former champion Samoa Joe in a high-stakes steel cage match.
The announcement was made during the April 30 episode of Dynamite after another explosive confrontation between Moxley, Joe, and their respective factions. As tensions boiled over, Samoa Joe locked in a chokehold on Moxley at the entrance ramp. Meanwhile, Claudio Castagnoli executed a brutal move on Katsuyori Shibata, slamming him stomach-first into an overturned steel chair — the same move he used weeks ago to injure Hook. Following the chaos, a visibly enraged Joe grabbed a microphone and challenged Moxley to meet him in a steel cage. The match was later confirmed by AEW officials.
This bout marks the first-ever singles encounter between Jon Moxley and Samoa Joe in AEW. According to Cagematch, their only prior one-on-one contest occurred on WWE RAW in December 2017, with Joe emerging victorious.
Samoa Joe is aiming to reclaim the AEW World Championship after a strong run that began at Worlds End 2023, where he defeated MJF. Joe held the title for nearly four months before dropping it to Swerve Strickland at Dynasty in April 2024. This Beach Break showdown will be Joe’s first opportunity to win back the title he lost.
As for Moxley, the four-time AEW World Champion recently passed 200 days in his current reign. He captured the championship from Bryan Danielson last October and has already racked up six successful defenses. A victory in this cage match would further solidify his place atop AEW’s singles division.
The steel cage stipulation promises a brutal, decisive encounter between two of AEW’s most intense competitors, and it could very well determine the dominant force in the promotion heading into the summer.
