AJ Styles Defends Road Dogg’s New Role as SmackDown Co-Lead Writer – AJ Styles has spoken out in defense of Brian “Road Dogg” James following criticism of his appointment as the new Co-Lead Writer of WWE SmackDown.
On X, Styles urged fans to consider the context of Road Dogg’s previous run as SmackDown’s lead writer, noting that it took place under a different WWE regime.
He wrote, “Before judging this guy from his past performance as the head writer. Just know that there was a man who picked it apart to the point that it was no longer his ideas anymore. 🤔”
Road Dogg previously held the position prior to WrestleMania 35 in 2019, during which time Styles was WWE Champion for nearly a full year.
At the time, Vince McMahon had the final say over WWE programming and was known for making sweeping last-minute changes before shows aired. Styles alluded to this in his defense, implying that Road Dogg’s past tenure as head writer should not be judged in the same light as his new role under Triple H’s leadership.
With Triple H now overseeing WWE Creative, many expect a different structure for SmackDown’s creative direction compared to the past. Road Dogg’s experience in WWE, both in the ring and behind the scenes, will now be put to the test once again as he takes on this key position.
