WWE Talent Voice Frustration Over Perceived Double Standard for The Rock – Talent within and outside of WWE have expressed frustration over what they perceive as a double standard when it comes to how Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is treated compared to the active roster.
It’s a widely acknowledged fact that returning legends like The Rock and Steve Austin often operate under different guidelines than current WWE talent. While active roster members typically adhere to scripted promos and are restricted in their language, legends like The Rock have more creative freedom and frequently incorporate adult language into their promos.
Dave Meltzer corroborated reports of discontent among talent regarding this double standard. There’s a sentiment among some that The Rock’s status as a member of the TKO Board of Directors shields him from repercussions, as he has a team of representatives to handle any issues on his behalf.
“he does what he wants and because he’s on the Board of Directors, nobody is going to say anything to him. He also has an entire team of representatives that he surrounds himself with, so any issues they handle while he stays out of the mess with the people he directly deals with.”
Despite previous expectations that the double standard would dissipate under Triple H’s leadership, it appears to persist. This frustration was compounded after a memo from Nick Khan, Triple H, and Dan Ventrelle reminded talent about the company’s PG guidelines, only for The Rock to seemingly flout these rules upon his return.
Talent has been instructed not to use certain words, like “ass,” on FOX due to network preferences, yet The Rock has disregarded these directives multiple times. Given The Rock’s position on the TKO Board of Directors and the company’s public trading status, some feel he should lead by example and adhere to the rules.
“The talent was told that because the company was publicly traded and the wishes of TKO management was for WWE to be TV-PG and he’s on the board, that if anything, he should be the one following the rules to set the example.”
This situation has led some to call for equal treatment for all talent, suggesting that if The Rock can operate outside of the usual constraints, then other performers like Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins should also have more creative freedom when feuding with him.
