Tony Khan Says Ric Flair is Essentially Paying AEW – AEW’s decision to sign Ric Flair to a multi-year deal stirred controversy when confirmed last month. The announcement highlighted Flair’s association with the Woooooo! Energy drink.
Flair’s signing was revealed as a gift from Tony Khan to Sting, aligning with Sting’s forthcoming retirement at next year’s Revolution PPV. Flair expressed his eagerness to join Sting for the ride until his retirement.
Reports following the signing disclosed that Flair’s deal with AEW mirrored Randy Savage’s move to WCW in the mid-1990s, where the energy drink sponsorship contributed significantly, if not entirely, to Flair’s salary within All Elite Wrestling. This strategy echoed WCW’s approach with the Slim Jim sponsorship for Randy Savage.
In a recent interview with The New York Post, AEW’s President Tony Khan shed light on the arrangement: “We’re not paying Ric Flair; Ric Flair is essentially paying us. We’re receiving compensation from Wooooo Energy for all of his appearances, allowing us to generate revenue through them.”
