Io Shirai’s status with WWE is still in the air as she has yet to re-sign ahead of her existing contract expiring next month.
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that those in NXT were of the belief that Shirai wanted to return to Japan and go back to Stardom because of stronger financial backing from Bushiroad, the parent company of NJPW.
Meltzer noted those close to Stardom did not indicate she was coming back, although they did believe she would be moving back to Japan if she wasn’t on the main roster.
People close to her from Japan said, “she went to WWE with the goal of making the main roster and believe she would stay with a main roster deal.” There’s still no word yet on if she has signed a new deal, but there is an offer on the table and her current deal hasn’t expired yet.
Shirai has been out of action due to an injury since April, last wrestling in a fatal 4-way match at NXT Stand & Deliver.
