Reason Behind Velveteen Dream Release – The release of The Velveteen Dream came as a surprise to some because WWE seemingly was standing behind him after the #SpeakingOut allegations last year but there were other backstage issues that drew heat towards him from talent.
While Dream believes that the allegations derailed his career, WWE sources claim that his firing had to do with something else that has not been made public. It was reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that there was a different incident and management was alerted about this by one of the top stars in the company.
On Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez said the following about Dream and his issues backstage:
“Forget all of the accusations [because] I don’t know what happened. I believe that WWE believes that he was innocent because otherwise, I believe they would have gotten rid of that guy very quickly. I don’t know what happened, I know nothing. All I know is about everything that everybody else knew about related to The Velveteen Dream.”
Alvarez continued, “The thing that I heard over and over again beside the fact that he kept disappearing that there were car accidents and that’s never good and I don’t really know what happened there but it was a regular occurrence. The thing that I heard about Velveteen was that he rubbed a lot of people the wrong way and it had nothing to do with accusations. What I heard over and over was that this guy, when he talks about his Velveteen Dream character and he talks about blending it with his real-life…I heard about the Velveteen Dream in the same way [as Shawn Michaels becoming the HBK character in real life].”
“Going to shows, not talking to anybody, being aloof, really rubbing people the wrong way. The point of all of this is the impression I was given from talking to people is to forget the accusations [because] this guy was on his way to self-destructing and probably getting fired one way or the other very very quickly. What I believe is that was largely the reason that The Velveteen Dream ended up being cut from WWE. He’s saying that these accusations played into this. I don’t know how, I don’t any more details. That’s what he’s saying here but the stuff that he says about playing the character and living the character, I hear a lot about that and it was not positive. There was a lot of problems with him with other people and as noted, a lot of people didn’t like it but they were concerned because he was in tight with people at the top and they didn’t feel comfortable going to management about it. But those things that they didn’t feel comfortable going to management about had nothing to do with accusations. That was a completely separate deal.”
