Matt Riddle’s Main Roster Call Up Caused Changes to NXT Plans

As noted, WWE has decided to call up Matt Riddle from NXT to the main roster by placing him on the SmackDown brand.

It turns out that this call up caused WWE to adjust its NXT plans that involved several wrestlers. Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported some additional details that noted it Riddle’s call up “sent shock waves through multiple brands.”

Of course, Vince McMahon decided after having a meeting with other WWE officials to bring up Riddle. However, that was a little easier said than done due to the coronavirus outbreak around the world.

Before the call up, Riddle was one-half of the NXT Tag Team Champions with Pete Dunne. WWE couldn’t bring Dunne to the TV tapings due to the travel ban, which prevented him from making it from the UK to the US.

Per the report, the company was fine to wait it out and see how things played out until Dunne got back. WWE also decided to bring in the team of Indus Shera, managed by Malcolm Bivens, to feud with the champions. That’s why the tag team attacked Riddle on an episode of NXT. It was supposed to continue until Dunne came back.

Once NXT officials were informed that Riddle would need to drop the NXT Tag Team Titles, management reportedly didn’t have enough confidence in Indus Shera to be in that spot as of yet. Thus, they were pulled from NXT television.

It was noted that Performance Center head coach Matt Bloom personally thinks the Indus Shera team has a high upside.

Due to Riddle’s move to the main roster still in place, WWE decided to go in a different direction and put the titles on Imperium. NXT officials reportedly feel they were better prepared to carry them.

Since Riddle needed to drop the titles, he needed a new partner and Timothy Thatcher was brought in to serve that role that would eventually lead to a brief program involving them.

Regarding the status of Dunne and how these decisions could impact him, the media outlet was told that there are no firm plans for anyone stuck overseas including Dunne. However, the possibility of Dunne working NXT UK tapings in the event the company gets those up and going could happen.
