WWE reportedly forced two big names to pull out of Starrcast II.
Conrad Thompson told Sports Illustrated that The Undertaker and Kurt Angle will not be appearing at the convention that takes place in Las Vegas during AEW Double Or Nothing weekend.
Starrcast is being run as a separate entity from All Elite Wrestling but the association did not sit well with WWE.
Thompson acknowledged that WWE was not happy about the booking. He said, “I was told it had gotten WWE’s attention and that Vince McMahon texted The Undertaker about the appearance. ’Taker’s representation, which is a company called Get Engaged, called to tell me, ‘WWE says he can’t do it.’?”
Thompson says a close friend of his discussed the situation with Vince McMahon and he was told that there was no heat on Thompson but McMahon felt that The Undertaker should not be making appearances outside of WWE. Thompson says he was assured that damages would be covered and there would be a suitable replacement or some sort of compromise made to make everyone happy.
Thompson said he was told that none of the main roster stars would be made available so he suggested Shawn Michaels as the replacement. Michaels was originally set to be booked for the event but backed out because of the proximity of Starrcast and AEW. He has yet to hear back from WWE on getting Michaels or someone else to replace Taker.
This isn’t the first time WWE has intervened like this. Taker was scheduled for a Q&A this month in the UK for Inside The Ropes. Taker will still fly out to sign autographs but he is no longer allowed to do the Q&A portion because of his new WWE contract.
