WWE is loaded with confidence ahead of November 4, where a special Wednesday edition of NXT is set to go directly head-to-head against AEW Dynamite: Blood & Guts. Following a recent viewership victory over Tony Khan’s promotion, WWE management refuses to play it safe and has given explicit orders to heavily stack the NXT card with main-roster star power to completely crush the competition.
According to Bryan Alvarez on Wrestling Observer Live, WWE officials originally lacked confidence during their previous head-to-head battle against AEW Grand Slam. That fear of losing is the exact reason why fans initially received a basic developmental broadcast instead of a loaded super-show.
Alvarez explained that the company chose a cautious approach back then, noting it was a “normal show, like they don’t even care.”
Alvarez revealed that WWE originally held back its major stars because they expected a defeat, stating that “they thought maybe they might not win on Tuesday head-to-head, so they thought, ‘Well, we’ll just do a show.’”
However, despite AEW bringing a heavily stacked lineup that featured a Will Ospreay title match, the white-and-gold brand still emerged victorious in the final ratings. This unexpected triumph completely altered the backstage mentality, shifting corporate officials from a defensive mindset to an aggressive approach.
Alvarez confirmed that “they gained a lot of confidence from the last time they went head-to-head” and the current internal attitude heading into the November 4 showdown is basically “we’re gonna crush them.”
The scheduling shift was completely accidental, as Tuesday night election coverage forced The CW to move NXT to Wednesday, dropping WWE directly onto AEW’s flagship night.
With reports indicating that Nick Khan personally made the executive decision to bring extra firepower, WWE has no intention of letting the competition regain bragging rights.
