An unnamed professional wrestling promotion was reportedly in deep negotiations with Paramount+ for a potential streaming partnership a little over a year ago, but those discussions ultimately collapsed when the platform pivoted to a massive sports deal.
The situation was revealed on Wrestling Observer Radio following news that Paramount Skydance cleared another major legal obstacle in its $110 billion merger with Warner Bros. Discovery. According to Dave Meltzer, the wrestling company was dealing directly with high-ranking Paramount executives and was highly confident a deal would materialize, given Paramount+ lacked professional wrestling programming at the time.
However, internal changes surrounding the Skydance merger and the arrival of Paramount’s massive $7.7 billion media rights deal with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) abruptly halted those talks. Once the UFC agreement came together, negotiations with the wrestling promotion went completely cold.
Meltzer also touched on what the clearing of the Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery merger could mean for All Elite Wrestling (AEW). AEW President Tony Khan and Paramount CEO David Ellison reportedly know each other through NFL circles and have held preliminary conversations. While no formal broadcast changes are locked in, industry figures have speculated on potential future opportunities, such as AEW specials airing on CBS or Paramount acquiring AEW pay-per-view distribution under a model similar to its UFC arrangement.
