Ilja Dragunov Reportedly Signs With AEW Ahead Of Imminent Debut

Former WWE NXT Champion Ilja Dragunov is officially bound for AEW. Following weeks of speculation surrounding his free agency, “The Mad Dragon” has finalized a deal with Tony Khan’s promotion and is expected to make his on-screen debut in the near future.

According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dragunov’s contract is officially signed, clearing the way for him to step onto AEW programming:

“As has been expected, Ilja Dragunov (Ilja Rukober, who turns 33 in a few weeks), has signed and should be starting very soon. This was pretty apparent in August the way Tony Khan was talking about him but as he noted with the New Level, these deals often take weeks to finalize. Obviously he’s a guy who can have great matches. But at this point they almost need more TV to facilitate such a large roster and keep people in the public eye.”

Potential Debut At Grand Slam: France

While an official debut date has not been announced by AEW, industry speculation points toward the upcoming Grand Slam: France event in Paris on Tuesday, October 6 as a natural landing spot.

European Footprint: Dragunov spent a significant portion of his early career establishing his reputation across European promotions before signing with WWE, making a Paris debut particularly fitting.
Head-To-Head Timing: Grand Slam: France airs on a Tuesday night directly opposite WWE NXT, giving AEW a high-impact platform to introduce the former NXT United States Champion to its audience.

Dragunov exited WWE in August 2026 after his contract expired. His run in the promotion included reigns as NXT Champion, NXT UK Champion, and United States Champion.
