Johnny Gargano Vows "No More Laying Down" Following WWE Championship Match On SmackDown

After spending nearly eight months in a creative rut on WWE television, Johnny Gargano is making a firm commitment to revitalizing his career following a high-profile championship opportunity.

On the September 4 episode of WWE SmackDown in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk offered Gargano an unexpected title shot. The opportunity snapped “Johnny Wrestling” out of an ongoing storyline funk, marking his return to main-event action.

Reflection On Facing CM Punk In Cleveland

Despite coming up short against Punk in a chaotic main event that involved heavy outside interference from Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens, Gunther, and Finn Bálor, Gargano took to social media to reflect on the emotional weight of the night.

“Last night was for the people who never gave up on me, even when I gave up on myself,” Gargano posted on Twitter. “I went toe to toe with the @WWE Champion in the main event of Smackdown in the arena where I first fell in love with professional wrestling as a child. Cleveland, I love you.. you had my back against the best in the world, and all I’ve ever wanted to do was be your guy and make you proud.”

Gargano highlighted his history as a longtime fan of Punk before addressing his physical and mental preparation heading into the match.

“For an indie kid like me.. it was an absolute honor, and dream to finally get in there with @CMPunk (who was the very first indie merch shirt I ever bought in High School),” Gargano wrote. “I’d love to tell you I was at my best, but that’d be a lie. After laying around feeling sorry for myself for 8 months.. Mentally and physically.. I’m a work in progress. But I guess we all are.”

“No More Laying Down” — Moving Past The DIY Era

Gargano concluded his statement with a clear message about his future trajectory on the blue brand, promising fans that his performance against Punk was the start of a renewed singles push.

“No more laying down. Last night was the beginning.. not the end. It’s time to stand up, be myself and put in the work to become the man I was always meant to be,” Gargano declared. “For you. For me. For those who still believe in Johnny Wrestling.”

Gargano’s period of inactivity and backstage frustration began following the departure of his long-time DIY tag team partner, Tommaso Ciampa. Ciampa subsequently signed with All Elite Wrestling, where he captured the AEW TNT Championship and recently competed at AEW All In: London.

With his hometown championship performance behind him, Gargano shifts his attention toward rebuilding his standing in the SmackDown singles division.
