WWE taped the September 4, 2026 episode of Friday Night SmackDown at the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland, Ohio. The broadcast featured hometown title defenses, high-profile segment setup for Sunday Night’s Main Event, and major championship matches confirmed for WWE’s upcoming tour in Mexico City.
Gunther Calls Out Sami Zayn
SmackDown opened with a recap of last week’s chaos, then Gunther marched straight to the ring. He said he’d been looking for Sami Zayn all day and knew he was in the building. The show wouldn’t continue until Zayn came out.
Zayn’s voice echoed from the crowd. He kept his distance, reminding everyone he has a broken hand. He said everyone seems mad at him lately, but he’s the victim. He should still be WWE Champion — the last real good guy — but instead the champion is “the biggest fraud, hypocrite, biggest piece of trash, CM Punk.” The crowd chanted for Punk, and Zayn said all he wants is the chance to reclaim what was stolen from him. Instead, he’s forced to jump through obstacles. Gunther got a spot in the No. 1 Contender Triple Threat, and Zayn wasn’t even included.
Zayn told Gunther to get comfortable, because this is the future of SmackDown. No easy rides. No contender matches. If he doesn’t sleep, no one sleeps. If he doesn’t eat, no one eats.
Gunther said he’d heard enough. If Zayn wouldn’t come to the ring, he’d drag him there. Gunther hopped the barricade, and Zayn insisted he wasn’t cleared.
Finn Balor appeared in the crowd beside Zayn. Balor said he was out for justice and wanted it now. Zayn bolted, jumping the barricade. He reached ringside — and Kevin Owens emerged. Owens chased him, Zayn jumped another barricade, and the chase spilled backstage.
CM Punk watched from the locker room. Nick Aldis walked in, saying they needed a No. 1 contender. Punk said he wanted Zayn, but stopped when he noticed Johnny Gargano lying on the floor with Candice LeRae. Punk asked if Johnny was still doing this. He told Gargano to listen — did he fight his whole career to lie down, or to be World Champion? Candice said she’s been trying for months. Punk said inside Gargano is Johnny Wrestling, Cleveland’s favorite son. He told Gargano that Cleveland’s own would face CM Punk for the WWE Title tonight.
Gargano didn’t move. Punk said it wouldn’t work and walked off. Candice asked for a few more minutes. The camera panned — Gargano stood up. “Let’s do it,” he said. Punk replied, “Perfect,” and walked away.
Charlotte Flair & Tatum Paxley vs. Fallon Henley & Lainey Reid (w/ Jacy Jayne)
Back from commercial, Charlotte Flair found Alexa Bliss backstage. Flair asked where she’d been — they had a tag match. Bliss said plans changed, and Tatum Paxley walked in. Paxley said she’s always dreamed of tagging with the Queen. Bliss said Paxley proved herself last week against Michin. Paxley said their skins would be touching tonight. Flair told her to take notes and not disappoint her.
The match began with Paxley and Reid. Reid hammered Paxley and threw her into the corner. She went for a splash, but Paxley kicked her away. Paxley tried a sunset flip, but Henley tagged in and the heels double‑teamed Paxley.
After the break, Flair tagged in and hit a crossbody on both opponents. She chopped Reid, hit a clothesline, then booted Henley off the apron. Reid kicked out of a roll‑up, Henley ran in, and Flair hit a fallaway slam. Paxley tagged in. Reid rolled outside, and Paxley hit a crossbody off the top onto both Reid and Henley. She threw Reid back in and went for the Figure Four, but Jayne jumped on the apron. Bliss yanked Jayne down and threw her into the post.
Reid rolled Paxley up, Paxley kicked out. Flair booted Reid from the apron. Paxley hit Cemetery Drive and scored the pin.
Winners: Charlotte Flair & Tatum Paxley
After the match, Jade Cargill, Michin, and B‑Fab stormed the ring. They attacked Flair, Bliss, and Paxley. Fatal Influence declared the floor theirs and backed away. Michin and B‑Fab lifted Paxley and hit the BTA. Cargill grabbed Flair and dropped her with Jaded as the beatdown continued.
Backstage – Cathy Kelley With Nikki Bella & Paige
Cathy Kelley caught up with Nikki Bella, who said she took her trust in Paige way too far. She said Paige failed the Bella brand and called her “a D‑grade skank.” Nikki claimed Paige has more passion behind closed doors than in the ring, blamed her for Brie’s injury, and said Paige ruined her return.
Paige walked in. She told Nikki she wouldn’t touch her — not yet. Paige said Nikki has hated her since day one, back when Paige built her career on hustle, loyalty, and respect. And in Mexico City, Nikki better bring everything she has, because if she doesn’t, Paige will end her career faster than her last relationship.
Backstage – Nick Aldis, Gunther & Danhausen
The camera cut to Nick Aldis on the phone. Gunther walked in and said they needed to talk. He’d been thinking about Aldis’ decisions — how he had to open the show dealing with Zayn because Aldis put him in that position. And now there’s “the ghost of Finn Balor” haunting everything.
Behind them, Danhausen was dusting framed photos on the wall.
Gunther said the cherry on top was Aldis giving Johnny Gargano a WWE Title match against CM Punk. He said he figured it out — Aldis stepped into the ring with him once, felt the limelight, and now he’s addicted to it. Gunther accused Aldis of making crazy decisions just to keep the attention on himself. He said he’s worried for the business and for Aldis, and told him to get it together and run the place properly.
Aldis said he appreciated the concern, but Gargano’s situation is between Gunther and Punk. As for Zayn, Gunther would have to wait — Aldis had important business to handle for the Women’s Championship. He walked off.
Danhausen put a hand on Gunther’s arm and called him “Gunner,” saying he understood exactly how he felt. Gunther grabbed his arm and told him never to touch him again. Gunther stormed off.
Danhausen then placed a photo of himself on Aldis’ desk — labeled Employee of the Month — and admired it proudly.
Nick Aldis, Dr. Woodroof & Chelsea Green In‑Ring Segment
Nick Aldis stood in the ring with Dr. Woodroof, ready to address Chelsea Green’s medical status publicly. He introduced the WWE Women’s Champion, and Chelsea marched out looking furious. She told the doctor she didn’t care what he had to say — they’ve already played this game. She wasn’t going to beg or cry. Tonight, the fans were getting an extremely pissed off WWE Women’s Champion.
Chelsea told Aldis she is still the WWE Women’s Champion. He was the one who said she could be a fighting champion, and he better not dare take that away. She said she knows she has a bullseye on her back, but she waited thirteen years for this title. If anyone thinks it’s easy to take it from her, let them try. She doesn’t need protecting. She’s not worried about her safety — she’s worried about her legacy.
Aldis said he respected her passion, but her safety is his job. And it wasn’t up to him anymore.
Dr. Woodroof told Chelsea her fractured orbital bone isn’t fully healed, but it is healing — and in his medical opinion, as long as she wears the protective face mask at all times, she is cleared to compete. Chelsea shook his hand and hugged him.
That’s when The Irresistible Forces hit the stage.
Nia Jax said finally — that’s what she wanted to hear. She thought Chelsea would never shut up. She wants the WWE Women’s Championship, and either Chelsea gives her a match right now or she’ll break her other orbital bone, because everyone knows Chelsea is made of glass. They entered the ring, and Nia ripped the mask out of Chelsea’s hands.
Tiffany Stratton’s music hit. Tiffany sprinted to the ring, and Chelsea bailed. Tiffany cracked Nia with a right hand and sent her to the floor. Legend grabbed Tiffany, but Stratton hit a backstabber.
Aldis stepped in and said Nia would get her title match against Chelsea Green next week in Mexico City. But Tiffany looked ready to fight now. So Aldis made it official — Tiffany Stratton vs. Nia Jax, right on the spot.
Tiffany hit a baseball slide on Legend, but Nia flattened her with a clothesline as the match began.
Tiffany Stratton (w/ Chelsea Green) vs. Nia Jax (w/ Lash Legend)
Back from commercial, the match was already underway. Tiffany hit the ropes and snapped off a hurricanrana, followed by a dropkick for a quick cover, but Nia powered out. Tiffany tried to build momentum again, but Nia caught her and threw her across the ring. Nia covered — Tiffany kicked out.
Nia climbed to the second rope, but Tiffany tripped her up and went for another pin, only getting two. Tiffany fired off right hands, hit the ropes, and landed a clothesline. She followed with a stunner, covering again — Nia kicked out.
Legend jumped onto the apron, and Tiffany dropkicked her off. Nia immediately planted Tiffany with a Samoan Drop. She climbed the second rope and crushed Tiffany with the Annihilator, covering her for the three.
Winner: Nia Jax
After the match, Nia grabbed Chelsea’s protective mask and taunted her, telling her to come get it. Chelsea stepped into the ring, but Nia tossed the mask to the floor and walked off with Legend.
Backstage – Kevin Owens
Byron Saxton spoke with Kevin Owens. Owens said he’s happy for Gargano, but he doesn’t think Punk made the match out of kindness. He knows exactly what Punk is doing — using Gargano to draw Sami Zayn out. Owens said he almost respects the strategy, but he’ll never respect anything Punk does. And if Punk is right and Zayn shows up tonight, Owens has a feeling Zayn won’t be alone.
Sit‑Down Interview – Cody Rhodes & Randy Orton
Corey Graves sat down with Cody Rhodes backstage. Before Graves could get far, Randy Orton walked in and asked if he could squeeze in. He told Cody not to touch him.
Orton said last week he got in Cody’s face, insulted his mother, and Cody did nothing. He asked what kind of son Cody is — not defending her when Orton called her “trailer park trash.” Orton told Cody to hit him. He insulted Cody’s wife, said Cody’s dog isn’t even dead, and Cody still said nothing.
Orton said he finally figured it out: Cody respects the rules so much, he won’t lay a finger on Orton because of the Undisputed WWE Championship. Cody is addicted to it. He loves the title more than he loves his own family. People say Orton is sick because of the voices — but Cody is sicker than anyone.
Cody stood up. He said maybe he is sick, maybe he’s aware of it, and everyone else seems to be too. But if Orton is right, that means on Sunday… Orton is screwed. Cody walked away.
Trick Williams & Lil Yachty
Trick Williams and Lil Yachty were backstage. Yachty told Trick not to worry — he’d “whoop that Trick all over Atlanta.” Trick reminded him he just needs Yachty to survive five minutes so Trick can get his rematch with Corbin.
Yachty said he’s been training all week. We saw the “training footage”: Yachty in the ring drinking water, on his phone, throwing money around, surrounded by women. He dipped a hand into an ice bath, then grabbed champagne instead.
Back in the locker room, Trick said he thought it was a workout video — but the only thing he saw moving was booty.
Baron Corbin walked in. He called Yachty a joke, but said what he’ll do to him on Sunday Night’s Main Event won’t be funny. Trick called him Mr. Clean. Trick said once Yachty survives, Corbin won’t. Corbin told Trick the only chance he has at the title depends on Yachty — and Trick’s hopes and dreams of being champion are dead.
The Miz & Kit Wilson vs. Bakusai (Shinsuke Nakamura & Kyoki)
The bell rang with Kit Wilson and Kyoki opening things up. Kyoki hit a crossbody, a clothesline, then a dropkick. Miz tagged in, chopped Kyoki out of mid‑air, but Kyoki fired back with chops of his own. Nakamura tagged in and Bakusai double‑teamed Miz. Nakamura covered for two, then hit a release German with Miz draped on the second rope. Nakamura stepped back in — Miz kicked the middle rope and sent Nakamura crashing to the floor.
Back from commercial, Miz hit a snapmare. Nakamura fought back with right hands, rolled Miz up for two, then cracked him with a spinning kick. Kyoki and Wilson tagged in. Kyoki unloaded with strikes, hit a hurricanrana, then whipped Wilson into Miz, knocking Miz to the floor. Kyoki superkicked Wilson, sending him outside, then hit a standing leg drop off the top rope onto both Miz and Wilson.
Kyoki threw Wilson back inside and covered, but Miz broke it up. Nakamura charged Miz — Miz dumped him outside. Kyoki hit an arm drag, Nakamura blasted Wilson with Kinshasa, Wilson tried a roll‑up, Kyoki kicked out, hit a reverse stunner, and pinned him.
Winners: Shinsuke Nakamura & Kyoki
The MFTs appeared on the stage, staring down Bakusai.
Backstage – Cathy Kelley With Blake Monroe & Giulia
Cathy Kelley interviewed Blake Monroe, who said her match still wasn’t suitable — she deserved a grander opponent and a grander entrance. Giulia stormed in and attacked her. They fought through gorilla and toward the stage. Giulia threw Monroe into the LED boards. Officials tried to break it up — Giulia blasted Monroe with a running knee anyway.
Backstage – Johnny Gargano, Candice LeRae & Sami Zayn
Gargano and Candice were backstage when a tapping hit the window — Sami Zayn. He hugged Gargano and said he was happy for him. Gargano said he knew Sami wanted the title match tonight, but Sami said this was justice. This match was for people like them. Even if he’s not out there physically, he’s still out there with him.
Sami told Gargano that if an opportunity falls into his lap, he needs to take it — “don’t be like Kevin Owens.” And if Gargano takes the title off Punk tonight, Sami said he’s first in line.
Undisputed WWE Championship – CM Punk (c) vs. Johnny Gargano (w/ Candice LeRae)
The bell rang and Punk went straight to basics, hitting a body slam. He tried a second, but Gargano landed on his feet and sent Punk to the ropes. Punk hit a shoulder tackle, but Gargano answered with a clothesline and corner punches. Gargano stepped onto the apron for a jumping DDT — Punk caught him, but Gargano spun out with a hurricanrana that sent Punk to the floor. Gargano followed with a splash on the outside.
Back from commercial, Punk drilled Gargano with a running knee and a clothesline. Punk climbed up top, but Gargano tripped him. Gargano tried to follow, Punk knocked him down, then hit a crossbody. Gargano rolled through for a near fall. Gargano cracked Punk with a superkick for two. Punk fired back with a kick to the head, covered, but Gargano kicked out.
On the apron, they traded shots. Gargano kicked Punk in the head and hit a spear back into the ring for another close count. Gargano went for a kick, Punk caught him and hit a Blue Thunder Bomb for two. Punk lifted Gargano — and Sami Zayn jumped the barricade. Punk dropped Gargano and went after Zayn with punches. Zayn slid into the ring, the referee ordered him out, and Zayn backed off.
Candice LeRae jumped onto the apron and hit Punk with a hurricanrana. Gargano flew through the ropes with a suicide dive, then hit a jumping DDT off the apron. He covered Punk — Punk kicked out.
Zayn grabbed the WWE Title at ringside — Kevin Owens blindsided him. Owens grabbed Zayn, but Gunther stormed in and booted Owens. Gunther grabbed Zayn, but Finn Balor hit Gunther with a slingblade. Zayn smashed Balor with the title. Gunther charged Zayn — Zayn hit him with the belt too. Zayn blasted Owens next.
Inside the ring, Punk hit Gargano with the GTS. LeRae distracted the referee. Zayn slid in and smashed Punk with the title. Gargano covered — Punk kicked out.
Zayn started talking to LeRae at ringside, but Nick Aldis and officials rushed out. Aldis kicked Zayn away from ringside. Gargano grabbed Punk — Punk hit another GTS and covered him for the three.
Winner: Still Undisputed WWE Champion, CM Punk
After the match, Aldis and Zayn argued. Punk grabbed a microphone and told Zayn he doesn’t want the title half as badly as Punk wants to break his face for sticking his nose where it doesn’t belong. Punk told Zayn he has a match next week in Mexico City. Punk’s music hit as SmackDown went off the air.
