Former All Elite Wrestling star Tay Melo has directly addressed speculation regarding her career status, shutting down rumors that she has quietly retired from professional wrestling.
Online discourse surrounding Melo’s future intensified after fans noticed that she had removed the word “wrestler” from her Instagram bio. Given that Melo requested her release from AEW earlier this summer, the subtle update led many fans to assume she was hanging up her boots for good.
“Nope, I Didn’t Retire” — Melo Responds To Rumors
After fan pages began posting farewell messages assuming her in-ring career was over, Melo took to X (formerly Twitter) on September 4 to set the record straight.
“Nope, I didn’t retire,” Melo posted in response to a fan claiming she had called it a career.
The clarification comes after months of uncertainty regarding her future in the industry. Melo has been absent from AEW television since the June 6 episode of AEW Collision, where she teamed alongside Anna Jay in a tag team loss against Divine Dominion (Lena Kross and Megan Bayne).
Tony Khan Confirms Release Request
The initial confusion regarding Melo’s wrestling future stems from comments made by AEW President Tony Khan during the AEW Redemption media call on July 23.
During the call, Khan revealed that Melo approached him immediately following her June 6 match to request an amicable release from her contract, citing a desire to step away from the business.
“Tay had said she wanted to step away from wrestling,” Khan stated during the media call. “She said, ‘I love AEW and I love the people here, but I want to step away from AEW and step away from wrestling.’ That’s what she told me.”
Khan emphasized that the discussion was entirely friendly and confirmed his intention to honor her request: “She came to me after the match and said, ‘I would like a release.’ I was taken aback, and we had a very nice talk. Since that talk, I haven’t brought her back or booked her, and I am going to give Tay that release.”
While Melo may be stepping back from competition following her departure from AEW, her latest statement confirms that she has not retired from professional wrestling entirely.
