Charlotte Flair Reveals Internal Hesitation Behind Surprise Tag Team With Alexa Bliss

While Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss successfully transformed their pairing into one of the most compelling dynamic partnerships in the WWE women’s division, the former Women’s Champion recently admitted that both she and WWE creative had major reservations before pulling the trigger.

Speaking with Stephanie McMahon on the What’s Your Story? podcast, Flair reflected on the unexpected alliance, revealing that the long, intense history between the two former rivals made both sides question whether a team-up could actually connect with the audience.

Overcoming Initial Doubts

Flair gave full credit to Bliss for convincing her to embrace the concept when she was initially resistant.

“She was like, ‘Put your big girl pants on. Remember who you are. Let’s do this.’ That’s great. And I’m like, ‘I don’t know. We’re really good at fighting each other. This isn’t going to work.’ And she’s like, ‘Mm-mm’, ‘Yes, ma’am,’” Flair recalled.

When McMahon joked that their fierce rivalry was essentially real life bleeding onto television screens, Flair agreed with a laugh: “So it’s kind of a shoot. That’s a shoot. No, that’s a shoot.”

Creative Hesitation Over Fan Perception

The primary concern behind the scenes was not personal friction, but rather how the audience would respond to putting two top stars together who occupied completely opposite ends of the moral spectrum with the fanbase.

“Well, okay, in fairness, like I don’t think, I think creative was a little hesitant too, because I was so hated and she so liked, really what was going to come of it,” Flair explained.

Instead of the crowd dynamic clashing, Flair noted that the stark contrast ended up elevating both women without either taking a backseat.

“But because we’re such stars in our own right, it really was just like. It’s fun. Fun and like—” Flair continued. “But we’re not lifting each other. It’s like we’re brightening each other because, you know, sometimes in tags it’s like, okay, this person’s here. Yeah. No, this just made both of our stars just shined brighter together because of the opposite.”

Flair added that the success of the duo had a ripple effect across the entire locker room: “And bringing then more light to everyone else too. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. And shining a light on the division, which is super cool.”
