Baron Corbin Reveals Backstage Details Behind His WWE Return & Contract Negotiations

Reigning WWE United States Champion Baron Corbin recently shed light on the process that led to his return to the promotion, revealing that he never reached out to management to request a job during his time away from the company.

Appearing on Busted Open Radio, Corbin discussed his exit following his contract expiration in late 2024, his work across the global independent circuit, and how casual communication with Paul “Triple H” Levesque eventually paved the way for his surprise return to WWE SmackDown on July 10, 2026.

Maintaining Personal Contact Without Requesting Work

Corbin emphasized that during his year-and-a-half absence, he deliberately kept his conversations with company executives strictly personal rather than professional.

“I think the coming back process was awesome because I never once in that year and a half that I was gone reached out,” Corbin explained. “You saw that interview with Hunter like, guys are always texting me, ‘I wanna come home.’ I never did that. If they want me back, they’ll call me. I’m not gonna beg for a job.”

Corbin noted that while he remained in touch with Levesque and select roster members, he ensured those interactions never crossed into business talks.

“I love that place and I had communication with Hunter in the time I was gone, but it was never like work,” Corbin noted. “I’d text him like, ‘Hey, congrats on this or how’s the family, how are the girls?’ Those kind of things. Even a few other people there, I stayed in touch with a couple of talent. But, that line was never crossed of like, ‘Hey, what would you think about me coming back?’ Eventually, they did reach out.”

Initial Conversations & Global Independent Circuit Run

According to Corbin, WWE officials initially approached him in December 2025 to gauge his interest in returning. At the time, Corbin was focused on rebuilding his reputation independently while competing internationally.

“We had a conversation in December that was very brief,” Corbin revealed. “It didn’t go anywhere because it was like, ‘Hey, what would you think about, would you be interested in that?’ I think the reply was, ‘I’d be open to a conversation but I’m not pressed, I’m doing things out here.’”

During his hiatus, Corbin competed across Mexico, Europe, and Australia, while also capturing the MLW World Tag Team Championship under the name Bishop Dyer alongside Donovan Dijak.

“I’m building back the reputation behind the name, I’m racking up those wins, I’m getting titles outside of here, traveling the world,” Corbin said. “Kinda doing the thing that I missed that a lot of people get to do before they come to WWE. I’m upping my game… I wrestled in Mexico and Europe and Australia and all of those places, it leveled out my in-ring ability, which was amazing.”

What’s Next For The United States Champion?

After returning on the July 10 edition of SmackDown, Corbin targeted Trick Williams, eventually defeating him at SummerSlam 2026 to claim his second United States Championship.

Corbin returns to action this weekend at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event in Atlanta, Georgia, in a high-stakes match against hip-hop star Lil Yachty. Under the match stipulations, if Lil Yachty can last five minutes in the ring with Corbin, Williams will earn a future title rematch for the United States Championship.
