Jim Ross Target Return Date For AEW Commentary Desk Revealed After Brain Surgery

Hall of Fame broadcaster Jim Ross is setting his sights on a major broadcast return. Speaking on the latest edition of his Grilling JR podcast, the legendary commentator revealed that he hopes to return to the headset at AEW All Out, which takes place live from the Now Arena in Chicago on September 26.

The update comes following a recent procedure where Ross had a medical shunt implanted in his brain to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid. While the procedure was successful in helping address his balance and memory issues, “Good Ol’ JR” disclosed that his physical recovery encountered an extra complication right before surgery.

Managing Travel & Physical Recovery

Medical concerns and long-haul travel restrictions previously forced Ross to miss AEW All In at Wembley Stadium. However, Ross highlighted that the short flight from his home in Oklahoma City to Chicago makes the upcoming September pay-per-view a much more realistic target.

Speaking on his current physical progress and readiness to call matches, Ross shared the following details regarding his health and conversations with AEW President Tony Khan:

“Yeah, man. It’s in the cards if I continue to improve at the rate that I currently am, no doubt about it. Because it’s a non-stop flight from OKC to Chicago. I’m not flying to London. I’m flying a short hop, so to speak. Two hours. And to me, that’s just a pretty short hop. But I’ve made it very known that I want to return to help on some of the main events as soon as I’m able to travel better.”

“As far as just looking at the match, interpreting what I see, and articulating it, I can do that now. But they’re worried about my falling, and they want me to get a little bit more steady on my feet.”

“So, if my broken toes aren’t an issue, for God’s sake, what else can go wrong? I don’t say that Tony Khan expects me to be there. He wants me to be there if I’m able. And he’s been great with my sickness. Never a negative call.”

Overcoming Recent Physical Setbacks

In addition to recovering from his brain surgery, Ross revealed he suffered a fall on the morning of his procedure that resulted in two broken toes on his left foot. Wearing a protective walking boot on one foot while maintaining balance has been the primary obstacle slowing down his mobility.

If his physical therapy continues on schedule and his stability improves over the next three weeks, Ross expects to join the broadcast team in Chicago to call main event matches at AEW All Out, which is scheduled for September 26.
