Jim Ross is recovering after undergoing successful brain surgery on Wednesday morning, bringing a wave of relief across the wrestling world. The 74‑year‑old commentator had a shunt procedure performed in Norman, Oklahoma on August 12, and early updates indicate everything went as planned.
Ross’ podcast co‑host Conrad Thompson shared the news shortly after the operation, noting that Ross is expected to return home before the end of the week. Thompson also encouraged fans to keep Ross in their thoughts as he continues his recovery.
“Happy to report that our pal @JRsBBQ had a successful procedure this morning!” Thompson wrote. “Everything went well and good ole JR is expected to be back home by Friday! Please keep JR in your prayers as we hope for a speedy recovery!”
Ross Explained the Procedure Ahead of Time
Before heading into surgery, Ross posted a message thanking fans for their support. He explained that doctors would drill a small hole in his skull to insert a tube designed to drain excess fluid from his brain. The hope is that the procedure will help alleviate the memory and balance issues he has been dealing with in recent months.
Despite knowing surgery was coming, Ross still made his scheduled appearance at WrestleCon in Minneapolis two weeks ago. He also expressed hope that he will be able to travel to London for AEW All In on August 30, though that will depend on how his recovery progresses.
Ross’ AEW contract status remains uncertain. He recently stated that he has not signed a new deal, and his current contract is set to expire sometime this month.
Ric Flair Sends His Support
Ric Flair was among the first to publicly send well wishes following the surgery. In a message posted Wednesday morning, Flair praised Ross and Jerry Lawler as the greatest commentary duo in wrestling history and encouraged Ross to stay strong through recovery.
“To my dear friend Jim Ross, who I’ve known since the 80s… I wish you a speedy recovery from your brain surgery today! You have to stay strong and make it through this, brother! You’ve been a warrior your whole life.”
Ross now begins the healing process, surrounded by support from fans, colleagues and friends who have followed his legendary career for decades.
