WWE Legend and Hollywood star Dave Bautista (Batista) has officially commenced his physical transformation to portray Kratos in Prime Video’s upcoming live-action God of War series.
Bautista stepped into the role of the “Ghost of Sparta” following the departure of Ryan Hurst, who was forced to exit the production after sustaining a torn bicep during an on-set stunt in June. With filming scheduled to resume in Vancouver later this fall, Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television opted to recast the central role rather than delay production into 2027.

After significantly slimming down over the past two years for various feature film roles, Bautista took to Instagram to share a progress video showcasing his return to heavy weight training. Showing off a noticeably bulked-up and vascular frame, the former World Heavyweight Champion provided an update on his timeline for the role.
“3rd week into weight training again. 2 more months to get to where I need to be. Like ridin’ a bike! LFG!” Bautista captioned the post.
The update drew immediate praise from across the professional wrestling community, with peers such as Paul Wight and WWE veteran Natalya dropping supportive reactions in the comment section.
Production Details & Ensemble Cast
The live-action adaptation—helmed by showrunner Ronald D. Moore—follows the narrative framework established in Santa Monica Studio’s critically acclaimed 2018 Norse reboot. The plot centers on Kratos and his young son, Atreus, as they embark on a dangerous quest across the realms to scatter the ashes of Faye, Atreus’ mother.
