The gold remains firmly in the possession of the CEO. In the opening championship clash of the evening at AEW WrestleDream 2026, Mercedes Mone successfully defended the AEW Women’s World Championship against former titleholder Thekla.
Marking the second successful defense of her current reign, Mone was forced to dig deep and rely on ruthless tactics to turn back a ferocious challenge from her rival.
High Stakes And A Brutal Finish
The grueling title match featured heavy back-and-forth action as Thekla pushed the champion to her absolute limit. As the bout entered its chaotic closing sequence, Moné capitalized on the official’s blind spot by removing her protective faceguard—worn due to a broken nose—and using it to strike Thekla.
Looking to seal the victory, Mone immediately attempted her signature Moné Maker finisher. However, Thekla showed incredible resilience by countering the attempt and nearly stealing the win with a tight roll-up that resulted in a dramatic two-count.
Undeterred, Mone regrouped and eventually managed to lock in her opening, finally connecting cleanly with the Mone Maker to secure the pinfall victory and retain her world championship.
