Former WWE Star Santos Escobar Rebrands as Romeo Malverde, Shares Lessons Learned Behind the Scenes

Former NXT Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar is opening up about his transition following his WWE release, reflecting on the valuable mentorship and experience he gained during his tenure with the promotion.

Despite signing a contract extension in late 2025, Escobar (real name Jorge Bolly) was among the roster cuts following WrestleMania 42. Now adopting the ring name Romeo Malverde, the veteran luchador believes he is entering the next chapter of his career as a smarter, more mature, and ultimately more profitable performer.

Knowledge Gained From Legends and Rivals

In a recent interview with Undisputed, Malverde credited a decorated group of coaches, producers, and active stars for shaping his growth inside and outside the ring.

“I learned from Terry Taylor, Norman Smiley, Fit Finlay, Steve Corino, Shawn Michaels, and Triple H,” Malverde said. “The amount of knowledge and wisdom they poured into me translated into a much more mature and intelligent superstar — and a much more profitable one.”

He also highlighted key main roster rivals who helped refine his in-ring instincts:

“I learned from AJ Styles, Rey Mysterio, Randy Orton. I’m going to show the world what I learned, with every piece of my being, every time I step in the ring.”

A Fire Ignited as Romeo Malverde

While Malverde’s next wrestling destination remains unconfirmed, he emphasized that his passion for the business is stronger than ever. Rather than leaning on past gimmicks—such as El Hijo del Fantasma or King Cuerno—he is focused entirely on building an evolved identity.

“This is my passion, my hunger, my fire in the face of adversity. That is what my new name means,” Malverde explained. “I am coming out of the fire even stronger and more ready than ever before. That is who I am, that is where I am. That is why I am Romeo Malverde.”
