Bully Ray doesn’t think WWE should present Oba Femi vs. Bron Breakker as a match that decides the future face of the company. The two rising stars are set to meet for the first time in a singles match next month at Sunday Night’s Main Event, a bout Paul Heyman proposed on RAW after stopping them from fighting on the spot.
Heyman argued that a match of that magnitude shouldn’t be given away on free television, and during his promo he came close to calling it a showdown to determine WWE’s future. That phrasing is exactly what Bully Ray pushed back against on Busted Open, saying WWE nearly crossed a line he believes would hurt whichever wrestler loses.
Ray said, “You [Dave LaGreaca] thought Oba and Bron would be promoted as who is the true future of the WWE? You asked me my opinion on that. And I was like, I don’t love that because whoever loses becomes not the future of the WWE. But I’ll be damned if Paul Heyman wasn’t listening to Dave LaGreca last week on WWE Radio because, as we all know, they listen. They didn’t advertise the match as the winner of this match is the future of the WWE. But I’ll be damned if they didn’t get real close to that last night”
Bully Ray Thinks “Future of WWE” Label Is Risky
Ray’s concern is simple: branding a match as “the future of WWE” creates a winner‑and‑loser narrative that could damage the momentum of the wrestler who doesn’t come out on top. While Heyman did mention that the winner would be the future of WWE, the company has not officially billed the match that way.
The upcoming bout marks the first singles meeting between Femi and Breakker. They’ve crossed paths in tag team matches at live events and dark matches, but this is their first major one‑on‑one encounter on television. WWE is clearly positioning both men as long‑term pillars, which is why Ray believes the company should avoid language that implies one of them is “not the future.”
Heyman’s promo on RAW set the stage for the match, confirming he had spoken with RAW General Manager Adam Pearce and secured the bout for Sunday Night’s Main Event on September 6 in Breakker’s hometown of Atlanta. Heyman shook Breakker’s hand as he left the ring, then turned and shook Femi’s as well, underscoring the importance of both men in WWE’s plans.
