Cody Rhodes and Oba Femi will stand side‑by‑side this Friday in Boston, but the World Tag Team Championship isn’t the only thing hanging over the match.
WWE confirmed that Rhodes and Femi will challenge Bron Breakker and Austin Theory at the August 14 SmackDown taping, though the bout is set as a dark match and won’t air on television. Even so, the pairing is already stirring more conversation than most on‑screen announcements.
Femi enters the match riding the momentum of his SummerSlam win over Brock Lesnar — a victory that closed the book on Lesnar’s career and immediately elevated Femi into WWE’s top tier. Since then, Breakker has made it clear he isn’t impressed. Their face‑offs on RAW have been tense, with Breakker openly questioning Paul Heyman’s admiration for Femi and treating him like an intruder in his territory.
That tension escalated again this week when Femi stepped in to help Akira Tozawa during an attack by The Vision. Breakker didn’t appreciate the interference, and the two powerhouses found themselves staring each other down yet again. The collision feels inevitable, and WWE knows it.
Instead of rushing into a singles match, WWE is adding Cody Rhodes to the equation. Rhodes and Femi fought to a no contest last December at Saturday Night’s Main Event, leaving unfinished business between them. Now they’re being forced to work together — two babyfaces with different motivations, both circling Breakker from different angles.
The match itself is expected to function as a live attraction for the Boston crowd rather than a televised storyline beat. But dark matches often serve a purpose, and this one places four major players in the same ring at a moment when the Breakker–Femi rivalry is heating up fast.
Whether Rhodes and Femi chase the gold or simply use the opportunity to send a message, Friday’s off‑camera showdown could be the next spark in WWE’s most intriguing emerging feud.
