Nick Aldis has stepped back into the spotlight thanks to his feud with GUNTHER, a rivalry that pulled the SmackDown General Manager into his first match in three years. The tension between the two began at WWE Night of Champions in Saudi Arabia, where Aldis confronted GUNTHER backstage after the former Intercontinental Champion failed to win the Undisputed WWE Championship in a triple threat match with Sami Zayn and Cody Rhodes.
The confrontation set the stage for Aldis vs. GUNTHER at SummerSlam, marking Aldis’ official WWE in‑ring debut. For someone who had spent the last several years working strictly in a management role, the match carried a different kind of pressure.
Aldis Talks Ring Shape, Preparation, and Future Possibilities
Speaking on WWE Now, Aldis admitted the match pushed him harder than expected. He said he was blown up only minutes into the bout, noting that no amount of gym work can replicate the demands of being inside the ring. Aldis explained exactly how he learned about the match:
“When [Ed Koskey] told me, that was in Saudi Arabia, I went, ‘When is SummerSlam?’ ‘August 1.’ ‘Today is June [27]? That’s a month.’ I go, ‘Ed, there is a big difference between physique shape and ring shape. I am not in ring shape.’ Without having too many conversations, I had a pretty good idea of what it was going to be,” he said. “Ed did tell me, ‘Card subject to change.’ I go, ‘Ed, I’m going to work on the basis that it’s happening, because I have go get ready. I’m working on the basis that it is happening, and if isn’t, at least I’ll be in better shape.’”
Aldis spent the last three years as SmackDown’s general manager, but fans still remember his run as one of the top independent wrestlers in the world. Before joining WWE, he held the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship and remained active in the ring until stepping away. His move into the GM role surprised many, but he has earned strong reviews for his work on SmackDown.
During the same interview, Aldis was asked whether his SummerSlam match was a one‑time appearance.
“I don’t know. I came in with no expectations, and I come out with none. If it’s there, it’s there,” he said.
When asked if he wants to wrestle again, Aldis kept it simple:
“Sure, in the right circumstances, yeah.”
Though Aldis lost at SummerSlam Night 1, he was reinstated as SmackDown General Manager following the event, closing the chapter on his brief return to the ring while leaving the door open for future possibilities.
