Cody Rhodes GUNTHER confrontation footage has been released by WWE following the abrupt ending of the July 10 episode of SmackDown. The Cody Rhodes GUNTHER confrontation adds further intensity to the storyline heading into Saturday Night’s Main Event.
As previously reported, SmackDown went off the air with chaos erupting after GUNTHER attacked SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis. The situation unfolded after Aldis announced a major tag team match for Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 18 at Madison Square Garden. GUNTHER will team with Sami Zayn to face Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk and Cody Rhodes.
GUNTHER was visibly frustrated after not receiving the singles championship opportunity he wanted. He responded by assaulting Aldis, locking in a chokehold and leaving him limp as WWE officials attempted to intervene. Cody Rhodes then made his entrance, but the broadcast ended before the situation could fully play out.
Cody Rhodes GUNTHER Confrontation Continues After Broadcast
WWE later shared the unseen footage on social media, revealing what happened next.
After the attack, GUNTHER circled the ring before beginning to walk up the entrance ramp. Cody Rhodes grabbed a microphone and demanded that GUNTHER return to the ring and fight him immediately.
Security stepped in to restrain Rhodes, but he continued calling for GUNTHER to come back, even demanding that the bell be rung. Despite the challenge, GUNTHER showed no interest in engaging further and continued walking to the backstage area.
The footage ended with the camera cutting back to Nick Aldis, who remained laid out at ringside following the earlier assault.
The Cody Rhodes GUNTHER confrontation adds more tension to the already announced tag team match for Saturday Night’s Main Event. While Rhodes was ready to fight on the spot, GUNTHER chose to walk away after making his statement, leaving the situation unresolved heading into the upcoming event.
